Come with your instrument, your tunes, and your music friends for a session at the Center for Irish Music on the third Saturday morning of the month from 10:00-11:30am.  The CIM Young Learners session, led by fiddle player and CIM instructor, Mary Vanorny, is for musicians ages 9-13 and is a great opportunity to spend time playing tunes and hanging out with music friends, new and old.  If you play, we encourage you to bring a tune list, a recording device and anything else you might want to share with your Irish music friends (a story, a snack, a new tune, even the title of your new favorite trad album!).  If you don’t play, you are welcome to come and listen.

A session is an Irish “jam session” where musicians and (and aficionados, or parents!) come together to enjoy traditional Irish music in a social context.  The musicians sit in a circle with their instruments while listeners gather around to chat, listen and encourage the musicians.  Sessions are usually led by one or many strong musicians who keep the music flowing by starting tunes, inviting players to start their own sets and by playing great music themselves!  At an Irish session, you’ll see fiddles, flutes, whistles, concertinas, accordions, uilleann pipes, bodhráns, guitars and sometimes even piano, mandolin, and hammered dulcimer!  If the session leader loves songs, singers are often asked to sing, so if you have a song, you might just have to sing it!
